Firm reaches new heights at Mahia
ABC Design won the supreme award in the East Coast Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards for this outstanding home at Mahia Heights.

Gisborne-based design and construction business ABC Design has enjoyed another successful year and for Sam Gavin and the team there is no sign of work slowing down.
The professional draftsman and qualified builder put one of the key reasons for demand for his services down to the fact that he carries both disciplines within his practice.
“It’s mainly word of mouth these days and because I can draw up designs with a builders perspective in mind it just works really well for the client because they are getting the design flair coupled with what is practically possible to build,” explains Sam.
When Business Central spoke with Sam he was hoping to employ a further draftsman in the near future but with the region boasting unprecedented growth over the past few years finding good staff is not easy.
“We are close to a year booked up in advance however, I try to keep one week a month open for unexpected projects that come along.”
Recent regional success in the East Coast Registered Master Builders House of the Year Award has capped off a very positive 2018.
It’s the first time Sam has entered the competition so to take out the supreme award, gold award and category winner for a home built at Mahia Heights came somewhat as a surprise. The 185sqm home commands an outstanding view out to sea and sits nestled above Mahia township.
Clad in scoria-red timber and with a commanding deck spanning the length of the home, the three bedroom, two bathroom house drew favour with judges, for its great use of open space and for the quality of workmanship that went into its construction.
Judges said it was evident the home had been built with passion and care. Protection from the weather along the expansive deck was achieved by building a large verandah roof, supported by timber columns and beam.
Each bedroom has a view, either out over the water or back to the bush-clad hillside. When the Pohutukawa in surrounding bush is in flower the colour of the home and its decking is accentuated.
“There was a lot of geo-tech engineering with the earthworks to established the building platform costing over $100,000. “The owner wanted level lawn areas out from the deck and not to have to walk down too many steps to get there.”
An interesting feature of the deck is the random use of reddish toned timber planks.
The large deck can be partitioned off into smaller areas by using screens if wanted.
“I sent four of my staff up to the national awards in Auckland and one of my apprentices stepped up to accept the national gold reserve award.”
Since returning to live in Gisborne eight years ago Sam and the team at ABC Design Limited have designed & built a number of dwellings in and around the East Coast Region.
