Young business makes a great start
This award-winning home by 8 Great Homes is full of space and light.

Jordan Li says the past five years, since establishing Hamilton home construction company 8 Great Homes, has been very positive. As evidence of this fact is the number of staff in the team “Before we started 8 Great Homes there was just myself and an apprentice but fast forward to today we have 13 staff.”
The company also has a property development arm to it and employs its own builders to complete projects. Jordan says the greatest benefit to the property development business is that he has complete control over the builds quality and timing.
These days with this growth and the busyness of life Jordan is off the tools, looking after planning for future projects and dealing with independent clients.
Hamilton is a city booming with new homes constructed in newly established suburbs on all sides of the city, but particularly in the north-east and south-west quarters, along with a revitalisation of older inner city suburbs.
In these places, older homes on large sections are removed or demolished and replaced with duplex/townhouse complex. All this means that for Jordan there’s plenty of work ahead.
“That’s great to know when you have the responsibility of having enough work to justify employing your current staff. Ideally I would like to employ up to 20 in the company and so far it feels like that will be achieved in time.”
8 Great Homes also shone in this years Waikato Region Master Builders House of the Year awards taking out the Resene New Home over $2 million top award for a fabulous build near Waikato River in Tamahere, just south of the city.
The 550sqm home overlooks the river on a bend so can see both banks and was appropriately called ‘Soak It Up’ for the competition. The owners wanted to make a real statement in terms of architecture and chose to draw inspiration from Australian and South Island homes.
Full of space and light the five bedroom home, four bathroom home has a state of the art entertainers kitchen, a suspended fireplace, step-down lounge and separate living area, to name a few of its design elements.
Outside the home’s generous decks allow plenty of space for enjoying the outdoors, for entertaining and large swimming pool, with pool-house along with a pizza oven and bar.The home is clad in vertical shiplap random width cedar, honed stack bonded block veneer, and vertical eurostyle pan cladding.

It took 18 months to complete. Jordan says he was surprised but delighted to see the home’s qualities recognised with four awards, Gold Reserve Finalist, Regional Catergory Award, Gold Award and Regional Lifestyle Award.
Now this build is completed Jordan and the team are involved in constructing a large number of duplex homes in one of its own subdivisions in Borman Road, Hamilton. In total, the area will be home to 12 townhouses.
“We had high spec townhouses in mind where owners can live in luxury as well as lock up and go, easy care landscape with no grass to mow. Claddings are mixed in vertical shiplap cedar, brick veneers, so each townhouse looks different and its own character. Currently stage 1 is all sold and completed with owners moved in, and we are onto constructiong stage 2 with seven left to sell.”
Jordan says he is very satisfied that his goal on founding, namely to take on bespoke high-end projects that distinguish themselves, has been fulfilled.
“I wanted to attach myself more to these one-off major builds that had a real impact on the housing sector than to just build lots of houses. “With projects like the one in Tamahere and our own investment projects I think we have struck that balance.”
