Hamilton-based Millennium Plastics’ injection moulding service sets it apart from the competition making it one of the leaders in the field in New Zealand, says company commercial manager James Igglesden.

The company provides several specialist services combined with the benefits of the research and development of its sister company DEC Manufacturing, which manufactures drug delivery cattle breeding devices, making for a unique offering.

“We’re not your average plastic moulder. While other moulders can play a small part in manufacturing process, we’ve got the expertise to oversee the whole operation from start to finish,” he says.

Millennium Plastics was originally formed in 1999 and now offers a team of over 50 seasoned plastics experts helping to produce some of New Zealand’s most innovative plastic products.

James says a key factor in the company’s success and a real point of difference is its people and the expertise they bring to each project.

He says the team prefers to get involved at the design stage of a project as this is where they can offer the most value ensuring the product can be manufactured in the most cost effective and efficient manner. Alternatively the company can take charge of the design process also.

“The product design process is the most important step and we take a collaborative approach. “There are two main factors we take into account – what are the customer’s requirements and how to translate these into a design that can be tooled and manufactured.

“We examine the functional specifications of the product and then evolve tooling to match the design,” he says.

The process involves 3D computer modelling followed by high-speed proto-typing. 3D printing allows Millennium Plastics to instantly create the prototype so clients can get their product to market faster.

Plastic NZ awarded Millennium Plastics the Design and Innovators Award in recognition of its cutting edge work.

The design process is backed by the company’s state of the art high-precision injection moulding facility, which is capable of processing a range of advanced engineering resins and biopolymers, including two-colour moulding and co-moulding soft over hard material.

Two other specialist moulding processes are printed circuit board and multi stage over moulding, which involves multiple moulding stages in a single component.

Millennium Plastics was originally formed in 1999 and now offers a team of over 50 seasoned plastics experts helping to produce some of New Zealand’s most innovative plastic products.

Coupled with the fact the facility is ISO 9001 accredited and in the process of achieving ISO 13485, this has seen the company secure customers such as Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, LIC Automation and Waikato Milking Systems.

Although human and animal health products remain a speciality Millennium Plastics can mould any type of plastic product a client requires.

As well as plastic injection moulding Millennium Plastics also offers liquid silicon injection moulding services. Complementary services include assembly, fixturing and prototyping.

James says that Millennium Plastics is always looking for new opportunities to partner with customers: “We don’t do mediocre. Everything we do is done to the highest standard.

“We’re not here to mould products and move on but rather we’re fully invested in the success of our clients. “Their product’s success is our bottom-line.”
