Successful practice celebrates 20 years
Celebrating 20 years of operation in Taupo, a shift to new premises has further cemented the dedication Fraser Cameron Architects has to the local region, says Belinda Ellis who owns the practice with husband Fraser Cameron.
The couple, who take a very hands on personal approach to architecture, purchased the 1930’s home at 94 Titiraupenga Street along with longterm collaborator Peter Cook Design.
They have converted the interior to a shared working space. Belinda says they have tried to remain true to the original home with no structural alterations made.
Instead the focus has been placed on using authentic natural materials with an emphasis on texture – a signature of the couple’s distinctive design style.
Working with Haimes Building and local subcontractors and suppliers to a tight time schedule, the space was stripped back and opened up to allow in plenty of light.
Sliding walls give flexibility to the space and design features include lighting by Coombes & Gabbie. A neutral colour scheme provides a backdrop to accentuate the materials, which include native timbers such as an original matai floor. Set in an 1125 square metre garden, exterior finishing is a work in progress.
Fraser Cameron Architects is a New Zealand Institute of Architects registered practice established in 1997 by principals Fraser and Belinda. The practice works on a variety of high quality residential projects throughout New Zealand from compact cost-effective builds to large homes.
Both Fraser and Belinda work on each project with Belinda supplying specific expertise around bespoke interior fit-outs appropriate to the project.
The practice provides direct principal service throughout the project and can offer full services of design, documentation, interior design and contract administration. Peter Cook Design provides expertise at the consent documentation stage.
Over the years the practice has developed a strong history of successful projects and has gained a multitude of regional and national level awards along the way.
More recently it has worked on two projects entered in the 2018 Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards.
The first project is a house in Taupo built by The Craftsmen for a local glass artist. The owner’s touches are apparent throughout the home including blown glass pendant lights.
Belinda says that there is a focus on natural materials including concrete floors, black cedar cladding, Fijian kauri ply ceilings and a five and a half metre long black mairi benchtop in the kitchen crafted by Cromptons Joinery Taupo.
The second entry is an upmarket holiday home in Whananaki Bay for Bella Homes, which captures the stunning views and utilizes materials that reflect the natural landscape.
Belinda puts the stunning results that Fraser Cameron Architects achieves down to having developed an established network of service driven building contractors, trades people, product suppliers and lighting designers.
The talented people that Fraser Cameron Architects works with results in award winning projects that stand out from the crowd, she says.
Although the reputation of the practice means it is in demand nation-wide, they take great pride in being based in Taupo, which is where Fraser grew up and where they are now bringing up their family.
Belinda says it is a real milestone to have clocked up 20 years in business in the region and celebrates the practice’s continued dedication and connection to Taupo.
